Model Essay of Chart Description

Task 2 (based on page 37 IELTS Foundation Study Skills)


Figure 3 shows the percentage of recycling by type of material during the period of 1994 to 2002.
As it is clear from the graph, all materials—newspaper, glass, aluminum, plastic-- had an increasing trend. The percentages, in the descending order, were as follows: newspaper, glass, aluminum, and plastic. Newspapers was obviously the material that was most often recycled. In 1994, around 28% of it was recycled. This continued in a rising trend and finally hit over 50% in 2002.
Glass had the next highest percentage of being recycled. In 1994, around 12% if plastic as recycled. In 1999, however, it was equaled by aluminum, which from that point onward continued climbing until 35% in 2002, slightly above the percentage of glass at 30%.
Finally, plastic comprised the material with the lowest percentage of recycle. Starting from zero in 1994, the percentages rose slowly, almost steadily, to 15% in the year 2002.
