IELTS-Writing task 2 (page 31)

Nowadays, the air pollution is getting worse. It is very difficult for us to get good guality air in public areas. One of many pollutants is the cigarette smoke. So, I state that smoking should be banned in all public places.

Firstly, some researches prove that inhaling cigarette endangers people’s health. The smoke does not only cause some bad effects to the smokers’ health but also to the nonsmokers’. The researchers discover that the effect of inhaling cigarette smoke is even worse to the nonsmokers. The smoke can cause many health’s problem such as cancer, inflammation of the lungs, etc. It is also dangerous for pregnancies.

Secondly, we need legal standards to make healthier environment. By forbidding smoking in public areas, we can get fresh air to breathe. It is the government’s authority to ban people smoking in public places. In Jakarta, this kind of regulation has been made. People are not allowed to smoke in public areas, such as offices, shopping centres, and parks. Anyone who disobeys this rule should be punished to pay fine.

In addition, the individual awareness is also needed to get healthy environment. The purpose of banning people smoking in public areas can be seen by obeying the rules. The smokers should be aware that other people deserve fresh air to breathe. Without people’s awareness, the goal of the regulation cannot be achieved.

In conclusion, I would maintain that smoking should be banned in public areas, because of its danger for human’s health. In order to have better environment, the government role is needed to produce legal standards. Besides that, we also need people’s participation to be aware about this, so that we will have healthier environment to live.

Model of a chronological essay

One often wonders how an aircraft gets off the ground and flies. A simple series of aerodynamic processes enable an airplane to take off the ground. First of all, the airplane starts moving down the runway, picking up speed. As it is picking up speed, the air stream moves quickly past its wings. The wings, which are flat on the bottom and bulging on the top, splits the rushing air into two different movements. The air flow under the wings moves slower than that over the wings, building up upward pressure on the bottom surface of the wings. As the plane reaches the top speed on the runway, around 280 kilometers per hour, the pressure of air under the wings becomes strong enough to lift the craft to the air. The plane’s nose looks up, and within seconds the entire aircraft is airborne. The plane has taken off, climbing higher and higher until it reaches the cruising altitude.

A Student's Work on Writing Task 1 IELTS

The chart shows the average numbers of hours per day spent on household tasks by both males and females of different age groups in the UK during the period 2000-2001.[because the time period is sometime in the past, we mostly use past tense]

Generally, the length of time both sexes spent on household tasks increased as they got / grew older. It also indicates that women spent more time on household tasks in each age group. [This is a good description of the general trend in the chart!]

The youngest age group of both sexes spend spent under one hour on household tasks. The amount of time increasesd about an hour in later age groups. [be careful with the expression ‘about an hour,” because for females in the age group 25-44, clearly the increase was more than one hour]

In the age group of 25-44, Wwomen spent about twice as much time on household tasks as men did, by the age of 25-44. Then it remained steadily in later age groups, while the amount of time men spent on household task increasesd.

Model of Argumentative Essay on IELTS Writing Task 2

Recently, scientists worried about climate change have urged governments to introduce measures to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that are seen as its main cause. Simultaneously, politicians and environmentalists have urged individuals to make changes to their lifestyle. I shall argue that governments and individuals should take joint responsibility for this problem [core of the argument].

Firstly [signal for the first argumentative point], industry accounts for a large proportion of the greenhouse gas emissions, and this can only be controlled by government action. Measures could be taken to discourage pollution, such as limiting or taxing the use of fossil fuels. Alternatively, subsidies could be offered to industries to clean up their production processes. If these ideas were adopted, I believe that businesses would regard pollution as a financial issue.

Secondly [signal for the second argumentative point], only discussion between governments can ensure that solutions are successful. The Kyoto agreement, for example, tried to reach global agreement on how to address the problem. Without such co-operation, it seems to me that efforts to reduce fuel consumption are unlikely to be effective.

However, national and international policies will only succeed if individuals also [signal for the third argumentative point] change their lifestyles. For example [signal of examples], people could think more carefully about how they use energy in their homes. By using less electricity, installing energy-efficient light bulbs and electrical appliances, or investing in solar panels, individuals can make a real difference.

In addition, [signal for the next argumentative point] I think individual attitudes to transport need to change. Instead of making short trips by car, people could choose to walk, cycle, or take a bus. Since cars are a major source of the problem, changing our behavior in this area would have a major impact.

In conclusion [signal for concluding], I would maintain that only a combination of international agreements, national policies, and changes in individual behavior will succeed in preventing further damage to the environment.
